A communication from the City of Norfolk
The Department of Neighborhood Development is rolling out a series of courses through its Neighbors Building Neighborhoods (NBN) Academy. Designed in partnership with local residents, the Academy is offered as a multi-level educational program to enhance the capacity of Norfolk residents to be engaged, responsible neighbors and community leaders. Some of the courses are stand alone; others are designed to build on one another like our three- part Leadership Development series which will include conflict resolution, consensus building, and facilitation skill building.
Upcoming courses include:
Saturday, October 1st – “An Interactive Introduction to the Principles of Neighbors Building Neighborhoods,” 10 am-noon at the Norfolk Workforce Development Center. The guiding principles and vision of NBN will be shared in a common sense and visual format. Norfolk Councilmembers Mamie Johnson and Thomas Smigiel will be on hand to provide guidance for how to effectively partner with the City. *** Please See Flyer Attached***
Thursday, October 13th – “A Live Asset Mapping Exercise with Cross Roads Civic League,” 6 – 8 pm at Colonial Heights Church, 833 Marvin Avenue. Asset mapping is a great tool for neighborhoods to use to identify community strengths and resources – the people, places, things and events that make neighborhoods socially and physically better. Come join in the discovery!
Saturday, October 15th – “Generational Changer: Is That You?” for youth 14-18, 10 am –noon at the Norfolk Workforce Development Center. This event is the kick-off for the launch of the youth track of the Neighbors Building Neighborhoods Academy. The course will enlighten participants on the importance of community service and civic engagement as well as the incidental benefits of service hours and letter of recommendations.
All NBN Academy courses will be offered at the Norfolk Workforce Development Center, 201 East Little Creek Road, unless otherwise noted.
