There have been two reported incidents this week of home burglaries. Both involved window air conditioner units being removed. In one incident the unit was removed and someone gained access to the home while the resident was out of town. The other was removed but the home owners pet scared them away, this occurred in the early am hours. Both occurred in the area between Colley Ave and Hampton Blvd.
Because of the older homes and buildings in Ghent we tend to use window units, which makes us an easy target. Everyone who uses window units can be a possible target. Not securing your unit is very much like leaving your window open all the time. One of the best methods to secure your units is to use long screws through the interior shell of the unit into the window frame. There are several other safety measure you can take but this should be your first step.
Another basic security step is to install motion sensor lighting. This is one of the least expensive ways to deter anyone thinking of making you or your home a target.
Also, with the summer vacation season, perceived increase in crime due the economy or just that crime seems to pick-up in the summer months please remember to be watchful. If you see suspicious activity – report it. Get to know your neighbors and watch out for each other.
