|On June 8, the Norfolk City Council is scheduled to decide on a two-year pilot program under which about 15 bus shelters will be outfitted with back-lit advertising (call 664-4242 for time and place or see http://www.norfolk.gov).
The plan is the result of an agreement between Hampton Roads Transit and Adams Advertising and was approved by the city’s Planning Commission. In exchange for the ads, Adams will pay renovation and bus shelter replacement costs. If successful, the program will be extended to all bus shelters in Norfolk.
The Ghent Neighborhood League opposes the plan (see letter “Proposed bus shelter ads an “eyesore”). The plan would require amendments to the city’s ordinances.
