NOAA Open House – June 9th & 10th

NOAA will be hosting an open house at the NOAA base on June 9 & 10th from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. during OpSail. There will be NOAA vessels open for public tours as well as visiting ships such as the Elizabeth River Project’s Learning Barge, the Virginia Aquarium’s research ship, and many more. Public Safety Memo from the Acting Chief of Police to the City Council

May is Norfolk Bike Month

Norfolk Bike Month is a community celebration of biking as an economical, environmentally friendly form of recreation that enhances productivity and overall health planned by The City of Norfolk’s Department of Recreation, Parks and Open Space in collaboration with Cultural Facilities’ Special Events, SevenVenues, Public Works, The Norfolk Police Department and Bike Norfolk.

The 2nd Annual Norfolk Bike Month includes a series of community bike rides, Bike to Work Week and BikeFest. BikeFest is a free event for all ages held on the waterfront of Norfolk’s Town Point Park with music, bike repairs, clinics and giveaways, culminating with a Cinco de Mayo celebration including live music, food and beverages!

Ghent Utility Construction Update

At the April GNL meeting the folks from the City, HRSD and Virginia Natural Gas provided an update to the construction on-going throughout Ghent. The good news is most areas of the neighborhood are getting updated water, gas and sewer lines which should improve service and reliability. Some of the infrastructure is over 80 years old. The bad news is that this is going to be a long process, with construction extending in some form through this time next year. The streets effected will be repaved with a temporary covering after the construction and then will be replaced with a final layer of asphalt 18 months later. This allows time for the systems to be verified and the ground to settle.

Links to Norfolk Department of Utilities and HRSD are on the side bar and provide links to updated project information. Flyers providing status of the gas and water were posted earlier.

As these efforts move forward, if you should have any questions, comments or concerns the your central point of contact with the City regarding these projects is Freda Burns - (757) 664-7216. Mrs. Burns is the coordinator and can deal with issues which may arise with any of the contractors or utility providers.

GNL has a new Police Community Resource Officer (CRO) – Change #2

Change 2: New update…The Norfolk Police Department re-assigned Officer Laura Mason and appointed Officer Medley (not Caruso) as the GNL’s new CRO. We want to wish Officer Mason all the best in her new assignment. She was dedicated to improving communications and out-reach to our community. Well done. The standard was set pretty high. Officer Medley, welcome aboard and we look forward to working with you.
